The Scarlet Letter, By Nathaniel Hawthorne - 1559 Words

Within the world, color is important. Color allows the expression of the people’s inner, true self. Color allows the expression of society’s forced image onto the people. Color allows one to be honest and truthful, yet hidden and sheltered. Color is our personality and who we are. Color challenges how far we can step out of the norm while still being accepted. Color is our own definition of ourselves, and yet it is open for interpretation. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s novel, The Scarlet Letter, color and how it correlates to honesty, truth, and one’s true self, is conveyed through various symbols and Hawthorne’s prominent use of imagery. All of his images have some sort of color, whether it is a vibrant red rose, or seemingly washed out black and white scene in an old movie. Various characters throughout Hawthorne’s novel go through a process and convey Hawthorne’s ultimate theme, which is to be truthful and honest; to let one’s tru e colors show regardless of the outcome and regardless of the possible judgment received, because in the end, lack of honesty can lead to a lingering, hungry, deathly guilt. The Scarlet Letter, as stated previously, features many characters that show their true colors, which shows their honesty and truthfulness to not only themselves, but those around them. The youngest, yet most vibrant character within the novel is a prime example of this reoccurring theme within Hawthorne’s novel. This character is the main character’s daughter, who isShow MoreRelatedThe Scarlet Letter By Nathaniel Hawthorne1242 Words   |  5 PagesLYS PAUL Modern Literature Ms. Gordon The Scarlet Letter The scarlet letter is book written by Nathaniel Hawthorne who is known as one the most studied writers because of his use of allegory and symbolism. The Criminal Justice System And Crime - 2402 Words

- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The criminal justice system views any crime as a crime committed against the state and places much emphasis on retribution and paying back to the community, through time, fines or community work. Historically punishment has been a very public affair, which was once a key aspect of the punishment process, through the use of the stocks, dunking chair, pillory, and hangman’s noose, although in today’s society punishment has become a lot more private (Newburn, 2007). However it has been argued that although the debt against the state has been paid, the victim of the crime has been left with no legal input to seek adequate retribution from the offender, leaving the victim perhaps feeling unsatisfied with the criminal justice process. Furthermore can formal social control institutions such as the criminal justice system and the government provide the best aspect of producing conformity and law abiding behaviour? Hirschi’s (1969) social control theory is concerned with what effect formal institutions have on conformity in individuals and in particular, how law abiding behaviour is produced due to these institutions (Walklate, 2005). However Wilson (2007) argues that formal methods of social control such as the criminal justice system are merely there to control and segregate delinquents and offenders who have not had adequate socialisation, which is where social mores are learnt and when conformity isShow MoreRelatedCrime And Crime : The Criminal Justice System Essay1520 Words   |  7 Pagesanalyzed various aspects of crime and criminality. Me Poetry Analysis free essay sample

The persona in this poem is an African American person. This is illustrated in the first two verses of the poem where the speaker says that he or she, being a metaphor for the African American race, is the Negro Problem. The reader knows that he is referring to himself because he speaks in first person. Dinner Guest: Me by Langston Hughes has a variety of different tones. One of the tones of the persona is anger. This is shown in the first two verses of the poem, â€Å"I know I am the Negro Problem,† and in the last two verses, â€Å"Solutions to the Problem, Of course, wait. † The speaker acknowledges the fact that himself along with the African American race are the Negro Problem that is present among the conversation of the white people at the dinner table. The anger derives from the fact that the speaker has become the Negro Problem because of his success being an African American and the success of his African American brothers and sisters. We will write a custom essay sample on Me Poetry Analysis or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In the last verses the speaker shows the anxiety towards the solution to this problem and knows only that in time, the problem will hopefully be solved. Another tone of the persona is serious. The overall theme, being the demanding of freedom, gives off a serious tone because the subject of racism and segregation in itself is a serious topics and was a problem that had to be faced by the African Americans during the 1960’s when the poem was written. This subject matter has been and currently is being taken seriously. The persona also portrays a secretive tone. This is seen in verses four through nine of the poem, â€Å"Answering the usual questions that come to white mind which seeks demurely to probe in polite way the why and wherewithal of darkness U. S. A. † In this quote the reader observes that in a secretive manner, the white people are trying to sound polite and kind while questioning the black race and their success when in reality they are doing it out of arrogance and unacceptance. Darkness U. S. A symbolizes the corruptness of the white people’s thoughts and conversation. Single rhyme and end rhyme: â€Å"Being wined and dined†¦ that comes to white mind† â€Å"To probe in polite way†¦ of darkness U. S. A† â€Å"In current democratic night†¦ ‘I’m so ashamed of being white. ’† â€Å"The wine divine†¦ At the damask table, mine† â€Å"Park Avenue at eight†¦ Of course, wait. † Internal Rhyme: â€Å"Being wined and dined† â€Å"The wine divine† Alliteration: â€Å"The why and wherewithal† Assonance: â€Å"To probe in polite way† â€Å"Wondering how things got his way† â€Å"At the damask table, mine† â€Å"Park avenue at eight† â€Å"Solutions to the problem† End rhyme in the first three verses draws attention to the deeper meaning on the poem. The speaker can be metaphor for the African American population that remains the Negro Problem in America. On a smaller scale, the Negro Problem is the topic of conversation at the table full of white people. The use of end rhyme in this poem also captures the reader’s attention as it is appealing to the ear thus making the reader want to read on. During the course of the poem, the use of rhyming is used only in certain places and not at the end of every verse. The lack of rhyming emphasizes the seriousness of the poem. A large amount of rhyming schemes portray a more light and happy tone, whereas a limited amount portrays a serious tone, which is suitable for this type of poem.

Computers vs typewriters essays

Computers vs typewriters essays Technology has made a great change with the developing of computers. Computers are the most used media in almost every business throughout the world, however, many business still use typewriters. Computers and typewriters have many differences and many similarities in technology; however, computers are more efficient than typewriters. First of all, I will write the similarities and difference of the appearance. The computer has a screen and the typewriter doesn't. The screen makes it easier to read what you are writing this is a benefit the computers have. The typewriter is smaller than the computer, this makes it convenient to store and the find room to use it. The computer takes more room and it is harder to store whenever you don't have enough room. The computer has to have a printer plugged in to be able to print. The typewriter doesn't need a printer you just need to put a paper and it is easier to print than waiting for it to come out. The computer's type board is attached be a cable and you can move it around to your conveniences, and the typewriter's keyboard is attached to it. They both have a keyboard with the same characteristics. The computer has speakers that make it an entertainment when you are working however; the typewriter in this point is more convenient because the music or noise doesn 't distract you. Both are use to type information. Next I will write about the different devices each one has, for instance both computer and typewriter need ink in order to be able to print. The typewriter needs a correction tape in order to be able to erase and the computer doesn't it is easier to go back and make any corrections. Computers have many formats and sizes and typewriters don't the just have the standard format and size. In a computer you can go to different files and programs and the typewriters don't. Both are very useful in many businesses for example, when it comes to fill out any paper work the typ...

CTL Brainstorming Day 2013

CTL Brainstorming Day 2013 On November 1, 2013, more than 150 career professionals from 6 countries met for the annual Career Thought Leaders’ Global Career Brainstorming Day to discuss best practices, innovations, trends, and other factors currently impacting global job search and career management. I am pleased to write about their findings, just as I have for the last 3 years! Resumes are not dead! Even if you get your foot in the door with LinkedIn or an Executive Bio, your resume will still be a key part of your job search process. You absolutely must show a recruiter, in no uncertain terms, how you will solve their client companies’ problems. And you’ll need to make your great impression in not 15 or 20 seconds, but six (6)!! Here are the top 10 takeaways I’d like to share for resumes in 2014: Focus on your most current position. Many people reading resumes do not even look past that first position, so capture their attention right away! Remember that many recruiters are reading resumes on their phones, so make them mobile-friendly (there are applications available to create mobile-friendly resumes). Go for succinctness and clarity of direction, especially in your personal branding. Less is more. That means no 5-6-line summary paragraphs! Include quotes/testimonials on your resume – these tidbits are even easier to collect now that LinkedIn recommendations are so commonly given. Create multiple versions of your resume – for email, mobile, social media profiles, and yes, one on paper for networking and interviews. In most cases, keep your resume to 1-2 pages. Of course there are exceptions to this rule. In Europe, you may still include a photo, birth date and information about your familial relationships on your resume (Do NOT do this in the U.S., the U.K. or Australia). Generally, the U.S.-style â€Å"multinational† resume is becoming the norm. Be sure to have an ATS-friendly resume available for on-line applications. You might want one resume that works for both humans and ATS systems, or you might choose a format that works for both. Consider creating an infographic resume, which is a rising trend. Twitter resumes, video clips and other multi-media presentations will also make you stand out from the competition. Snail mailing a resume can make a good impression! Do it in addition to emailing and submitting on line! Don’t be afraid to include hyperlinks on your resume. This is a great way to keep things concise while offering a portal into the depth of your experience. More and more, resumes are becoming an aggregation of social media, with less content in the resume itself. Wondering about LinkedIn? LinkedIn profiles are a complement to your resume, not a carbon copy. LinkedIn provides an opportunity to be more personal and engaging. As recommended in my e-book, How to Write a KILLER LinkedIn Profile, create a robust LinkedIn profile complete with multimedia presentations, projects and videos. And use your LinkedIn Summary to project your â€Å"motivation, passion and individuality.† For more detail about trends in a range of job search categories, please go to the full article, Findings of 2013 Global Career Brainstorming Day:   Trends for the Now, the New the Next in Careers. Factory Farms Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words

Factory Farms - Research Paper Example For instance, chickens are so overcrowded that they must have their beaks cut off, because, if they do not, they will peck one another to death. Pigs are in tiny pens that are so small that the pig cannot turn around, and they are stacked in pens, one on top of the other, so that the animals above them deposit their wastes onto the animals below them. Since pigs are, by nature, clean animals, this is no doubt abhorrent to them, yet this is how they must live, for years, until they are carted off to go slaughter. Cows are cruelly branded with a hot iron and crammed into feed lots. The fate of these animals is abhorrent to anybody with a conscience. These animals can feel pain and fear, and to put them into these conditions is beyond barbaric and cruel. Beyond this, factory farms are also bad for the environment. The animal excrement causes pollution that runs off into the water. Taking the animals off the farm and onto the feed lot deprives the farming soil of fertilizer, which means that artificial fertilizer must be used, and this means using fossil fuel. Moreover, land must be clear cut to raise food for these animals. In short, factory farms and the proliferation of animals on these farms is a very inefficient use of resources. Regular methods of farming, in which animals are free to roam the land, and graze on grass, and have a natural life, must be brought back. This would not only be good for the environment, but it would result in much less cruelty to animals. Even though factory farms produce a large quantity of food, and the food is ostensibly necessary to feed a growing planet, farmers should make innovations that make their operations less cruel to animals and more kind to the environment. A. Cruelty to Animals Animal rights activists and animal lovers everywhere are clear that animals should not be subjected to needless suffering. The evidence regarding factory farms indicates that animals suffer needlessly, so these factory farms are violating ever ything that animal lovers and animal rights activists stand for. James McWilliams, author of ?hy Free-Range Meat Isn't Much Better Than Factory Farmedstates that the basic argument against factory farms is that ?nimals held in confinement are denied access to the basic preconditions of happiness the freedoms to move, make basic choices, have sex and socialize. The fact that animals are transformed into the moral equivalent of machinery, rather than respected as living creatures, will stike any sensible observer as fundamentally wrong...thoughtful consumers do not want animals to be needlessly hurt(McWilliams). And ?eedlessly hurtis exactly what animals are on the factory farms. For instance, chickens are kept in extremely overcrowded conditions. According to Freedman & Barnouin, chickens have to have their beaks cut off of their faces because, in their overcrowded conditions, they would peck each other to death if they did not (Freedman & Barnouin, p. 84). Chickens are also given ho rmones that make them grow so rapidly that their hearts and lungs cannot keep up with the growth, and they die of heart failure. Cows are branded with a hot iron without anesthesia, and can live on the range without shelter or veterinary care. Cows may also live for months in an overcrowded feedlot, where they are fed growth hormones and rich grains. The rich grains sometimes causes the cows intestines to ulcerate and rupture. These factory farms have so many cattles that they often have downed animals which are lame when they come to the slaughterhouse. These animals are often beaten and prodded to get them to move (Factory Farming Animal Cruelty is Standard Operating Procedure for 95-99% of Animals Raised For Food). Pigs also live in deplorable conditions. Naturally clean animals, they are forced to
